Baroness May Blood - A Formidable Presence

The Rev. Dr. David Clements, who knew and worked with Baroness May Blood during his time as a Methodist Minister in the Shankill area has issued the following statement in his capacity as the Chair of the Irish Methodist Church's Council on Social Responsibility:

"We are saddened to hear of the death of Baroness May Blood. She was a fearless and tenacious advocate for working families in the Greater Shankill area and beyond. She was straight talking and honest and you always knew where you stood with her.

During her life time she worked tirelessly for those who were underprivileged - economically, educationally and socially.

May embraced and espoused Integrated education.

Baroness Blood had a very strong and practical Christian faith and believed her actions were inspired by the life and example of Jesus Christ.

In spite of this she was at times critical of the Church, although her comments were always constructive, challenging us to do more.”

Dr. Clements concludes his statement on a personal note:

“I count it a privilege to have known May and to have worked with her.

As a Council, we offer our deep condolences to the family of Baroness Blood, her friends and colleagues.

She will be greatly missed.”
