Grants

One way that WMP supports our church family is by providing grants. These grants support church-focused initiatives, including:

  • Evangelism

  • Discipleship

  • Theological education

  • Leadership training

  • Support for sustainable church growth (e.g. income generation projects)

Here are some examples of recent grants awarded by WMP:

  • Bible Distribution in Honduras - £10,000 (€12,100)

    The Bible Society in Honduras is bringing Scripture to prisoners, police officers and soldiers. The effect has been incredible: the murder rate has plummeted, corruption has reduced, and prisoners are giving their lives to Jesus.

    This grant was made in partnership the Bible Society in Northern Ireland.

  • Preachers Handbook in Ghana - £3,000 (€3,600)

    Lay preachers (or “exhorters”) play a key role in the Methodist Church Ghana. However, many lack access to theological training or reference materials.

    The Preachers Handbook helps them by providing sermon outlines tailored to the local context, in an an accessible format. The project has been running for more than a decade, and proved very popular with local preachers - including some from other denominations!

  • Guin Dictionary Project in Togo - £4,600 (€5,500)

    Guingbé is a language spoken by more than half a million people, mostly in Togo and Benin. There is a version of the Bible available in Guingbé, but the Methodist Church in Togo have found that many readers still struggle to really understand the text.

    This grant supported the Methodist Church in Togo to revise and reprinting a Guingbé-French dictionary, which will help Guingbé speakers to fully engage with Scripture.

  • Youth Camp in Sri Lanka - £5,000 (€5,900)

    Through WMP, Irish Methodists supported the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka’s camp for young people, helping them to discover “God’s Trend” and call for their lives.

  • International Women in Leadership Conference, Ghana - £8,500 (€9,500)

    WMP supported the Methodist Church in Ghana to run a Leadership Conference, aimed at empowering female leadership at all levels within the Church. Delegates attended from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Ivory Coast, Benin and The Gambia.

  • Bible distribution in Cuba - £15,000 (€17,200)

    Working with the Bible Society Northern Ireland, WMP supported the Bible Society in Cuba with their “Bible for Every Cuban” project which aims improve access to Scripture and educational Bible resources.

  • Children’s Ministry in Poland - £9,300 (€10,500)

    WMP supported UMC Poland to run summer children’s camps, which have proven to be a really effective form of outreach.

  • Training for Lay Preachers in Sierra Leone - £26,000 (€30,000)

    Access to high-quality training for ministers and lay preachers is a challenge for many churches. Through WMP, Irish Methodists were able to support training for Lay Preachers in Sierra Leone. This grant also provided financial support to ministers, and investment in income-generation projects to support sustainable church growth.
